When it comes to working with electronics, especially computers, one thing most of us often fail to consider is ergonomics. Computing and accessing the internet has become an everyday activity for millions worldwide, and it is expected to keep growing. The challenge is that our bodies were never intended to sit in one place for many hours and make repetitive motions with our fingers and hands while the rest of our body remains stationary.
The cost of heavy computer use can be a stiff neck, upper and lower back pain, and carpel tunnel. You may not feel these consequences immediately, but they will happen over time if you don’t take steps now to make sure you are computing in an ergonomically correct fashion. Here are just a few things you can do to make your computing more enjoyable and insure long term health:
1. Make sure to have the proper chair height
Your chair should be adjusted so you are able to place your feet flat on the floor. If you are working with a chair that cannot be adjusted, then use a footrest.
2. Properly align the backrest of your chair
The backrest of your chair should be aligned in a way that makes your back feel comfortable while following the curves of your back. The ideal setting is to be reclined from 110 to 130 degrees. If you can’t do this with your chair, use a towel or cushion to help make this adjustment.
3. Keep your frequently used items within reach
It is important that the items you use regularly, like phones, pens or books are easily accessible. You should not need to reach your arms too far to get to these items.
4. Keep the height of your computer monitor at eye level
Insure that your computer screen is level with your eyes so you don’t need to strain your neck by bending it up or down to see your monitor.
